"Journey", 2018

FCJ Retreat & Conference Centre, Calgary AB

Acrylic

6' x 9'

A two-part mural series commissioned for FCJ (Faithful Companions of Jesus) Centre - a gathering place for meetings, conferences, retreats and special events in Calgary.

Set on the scenic banks of the Elbow River, “Journey” illustrates the landscape of the FCJ property at a pre-European point in time. The lush riverside, mystical deer reflection and foreground tipi ring honour the place and spirit of those who came before. The artwork reveals how one’s way of life at the FCJ Centre is enhanced by the knowledge and experiences shared from being in this special place.

"Companions" is inspired by Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." Three figures sit comfortably on the FCJ grounds, creating an atmosphere of sharing in this safe and sheltered space. A naturally-formed dreamcatcher completes the artwork, celebrating the beauty of this place as well as the contributions of different cultures to the legacy of FCJ.
