“Foundations for the Future” and "Building Memories" is a monumental two-part installation and historical collage that represents the story of the former Red Deer Arena (built in 1952, decommissioned in 2016).

On the West Concourse Wall, a timeline-ribbon of visuals highlights building construction and refurbishment over the years, as well as significant events, people, teams and sports that relate to the old Arena and resonate with the community today. The far right side concludes with photography of people writing messages on the ice, documented during the farewell ceremony when the building was decommissioned. ‘Movement on ice’ lines provide boundaries for photography and continue on to the surrounding wall to energize the space, while key activities (4 large, 15’ paintings) unify the composition and complete the story.

A continuation of the theme above, the East Foyer Wall displays a series of banners that provide a pictorial history of the Arena's construction. From left to right, vintage photography documents the original site, breaking ground, the building exterior, laying the floor and facility upgrades, finishing with an image of the rink in use. A colourful, painterly background shows the Arena at night and serves to connect the old with the new.
